Sky Top's Gold Rush Gem Mine was inspired by more than an idea for a fun attraction! Did you know this area has historic ties to gem mining that date back to the 1800's?
It's true! The area is rich in Zircons, a mineral that was once used as a component in gas lamps. When lit by a flame, Zirconia gas mantles produce a bright, white light which was sought after as a durable and efficient light source during the 19th century.
Fun Fact:
Thomas Edison visited the area in 1906 while sourcing materials to develop the incandescent lightbulb!
Sky Top Orchard sits atop Mt. McAlpine which straddles the neighboring towns of Flat Rock and Zirconia below. There were three zircon mines in the area, the largest of which was the Freeman Mine, which was just down the road from Sky Top!
Flat Rock Together wrote an informative article about the history of mining in Zirconia. Read the article before panning for some of your very own gemstones at Sky Top.
